There are two kinds of people in this world, those that have been pulled over by the cops, and those who are about to be. It’s bound to happen to anyone who drives a car at some point in their lives. Speeding is the biggest reason for interaction between the police and public, and anyone that tells you they’ve never gone over the limit is a liar. Speeding doesn’t make you a criminal, so don’t freak out. Here’s what to do when you get pulled over by the police.

Get Your Documents Ready

Once you get your car stopped on the shoulder, get your papers ready. Fish your insurance card and registration out of the glove box and get your license out, too. The officer will ask for all those documents at some point. It’s better to have them ready and waiting or show your documents when asked. Don’t start fishing around while the officer is talking to you. He might think you are going for a weapon.

Put Your Hands on the Steering Wheel

Crack your window enough that you can hear the officer. Police officers approach cautiously and are as anxious as you are, so put them at ease. Place your hands on the steering wheel or keep them on your lap, anywhere they are visible. If you get pulled over at night, turn the dome light on so the officer can see the interior of the car. Do everything you can to show you are not a threat.

Listen to the Police

It’s imperative that you listen to authority figures, and police officers are no exception. The cop will be explaining why he pulled you over and what he needs you to do. You don’t have to answer, and you have the right to remain silent. If you decide to respond, then keep it short and in the affirmative, such as “ok”, “sure”, “yes” and “no.” Being short or rude with the officer will make things worse, and your attitude could have talked your way into a ticket instead of a warning.

Try Not to Get Excited

You got pulled over by the police. So what? If you only got pulled over for a minor traffic violation, you’ll be on your way soon. Speeding or having a broken taillight isn’t a felony. Be calm, take your ticket or warning, and get on with your day. It’s a minor inconvenience you brought on yourself with bad driving, so grit your teeth and learn something from the experience.
